  • Internet Marketing

There are many facets to the online promotion of web sites. Formulating an ongoing integrated and structured methodology between them all is essential for success in the field.

SEO - Search Engine Optimisation is the technical discipline engaged in the manipulation of 'on-page' elements (those on the website itself such as text/images and code) and 'off-page' elements (external items such as links coming into a website from another), with the express aim of causing a website to rank as highly as possible on the Search Engines for a given keyword or set of keywords.

SEM - Search Engine Marketing is the branch of Internet Marketing concerned with the placing of advertisements. These vary in type between visual ads such as banners which are charged to the marketer according to how often they appear, to PPC (Pay Per Click) ads, where the advertiser pays each time a web visitor clicks on their ad. The most well-known example of the latter is Google's 'Adwords' program (the ads that appear above and down the side of the Google search reults).

Social Media - With the explosion of public platforms such as Google+, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Myspace, and other social sites such as Stumbleupon, Digg and many more, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Add in video channels, blogging, forum activity, tagging, voting sites etc., and it soon becomes clear that unfocussed social activity can be a major strain on a business.

Conversion - This is the art of making one's web properties as attractive to the user as possible; not in a design sense, but in the sense of providing the visitor with what they want and expect, and encouraging them to perform the activities you hope of them (placing an order, or filling out a form, for example).

Mobile - is your company selling itself through a mobile version of your web site? With smart phones and tablets common place and the percentage of web visitors from mobile devices soaring, can you afford not to have a meaningful presence in this area?

Email - regular newsletters, promotional marketing, one-off promotions, press releases - all can prove invaluable for brand reach and sales.

Content Creation and Syndication - is your company producing useful articles and other content in your area of expertise and disseminating it across the web to useful potential customers or partners?

Unless the above elements are approached in a systematic, planned, project-based and (crucially) integrated fashion, they are likely to fail at best, and even be counter-productive to your brand if mishandled. At worst, a poor online marketing strategy can destroy Search Engine rankings and brand reputation.
